How long is the drive from Windhoek to Etosha?
For an easy drive you should plan for about 5 hours from Windhoek Airport to Etosha. Remember that the gates to the National Park close at sunset so you want to make sure you arrive in time. If you are staying at in a private lodge or concession adjourning the park, they are more flexible with their gate times. Do confirm this before you set off.
Should I drive or fly?
If you have time for your holiday than driving is a great way to get around Namibia, and really experience the country. It is cost effective too.
If however your holiday time is limited, then flying between destinations really allows you to see all of what the country has to offer in a much shorter space. Flying is the more expensive option, but you will have some of the most scenic flights of your life.
What are the road conditions like to Etosha and then once we are in Etosha?
There is a tar road from Windhoek to Etosha and then after that you are on gravel roads in the park. Some of the smaller roads within the park are in a lessor condition to the main road that runs from West to East (or visa versa), but in a 2 x 4 or 4 x 4 vehicle this will not cause a problem. If you are staying at a private lodge you will be taking trips into the park in the lodge vehicles.
Are there places to stop for petrol in Etosha?
Yes there are, but be conservative. The distances are vast so make sure you always have more than enough.
Can I see the salt pan?
Yes you can. In the wet months you may even see water in the pan. But otherwise there are look out points to stop at around the pan.
Do I need to carry water in the car?
The days are hot and road conditions dusty - it is recommended that you carry lots of liquid with you.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing, light cotton is generally recommended. Wear good walking shoes. Bright colours are not recommended.
What animals will we see in Etosha?
Etosha is a vast and unique place. The harsh conditions here make for some amazing game viewing. From the vast herds of plains game to the predators that follow - the desert adapteded wildlife here exists in a magnificent environment. You can see four out of the big 5 (no buffalo).
Is Etosha good for bird watching?
Yes, and as in a lot of places in Africa, the seasons play a big role in this. Distances are vast so please don’t forget your binoculors.
Are there places to stretch our legs?
If you are on a private lodge vehicle you can chat to your guide and he will help in this regard. If you are driving your self then you can stop in the rest camps and picnic spots. Etosha is a wildlife reserve so please do take heed of the signs.
Is there Malaria in Etosha?
Etosha does fall in a malaria area so please do consult your local doctor before you go.
What are the park hours at Etosha?
The park opens and sunrise and closes at sunset.
Do we have to pay to enter the park?
If you are driving yourself you will need to pay entry into the park daily. If you are staying at a private lodge this fee is generally included in your stay.
How long does a game drive take?
With the vast distances and the main road operating from one side of the park to the other, you can do a game drive for a few hours in the morning or evening, or you can spend your whole day in the park. Chat to your guide and see what works for you during your stay.
